Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 2 has introduced the “Rivalries” mechanic, a high-stakes system that tasks players with hunting down specific opponents for currency and leaderboard progression. By tracking and eliminating assigned Rivals within a five-minute window, players earn Rivalry Credits, which can be spent on powerful gear, weapons, and exclusive perks.
How Fortnite Rivalries Work
Once a match begins, the game automatically designates a target, marking their general location with a red circle on your map. Players have exactly five minutes to locate and eliminate their Rival. Successfully securing the kill grants an instant 10 Rivalry Credits. If a different player eliminates your target first, they will drop a “Rivalry Contract” at the site. Collecting this item before the timer expires still counts as a win and awards the 10 credits, but if another player beats you to it, they effectively become your new Rival.
Managing Credits and Rivalry Screens
While the game assigns an initial Rival at the start of every match, you can manually trigger new encounters by visiting “Rivalry Screens.” These terminals are located throughout the map, marked by crossed-swords icons. These screens serve two purposes: initiating new hunting contracts and spending your accumulated Rivalry Credits. Because this currency carries over between matches, you can strategically save up for high-tier weapons and boosts. Note that some rewards require a specific number of total Rivalry wins before they become available for purchase.
The Showdown Leaderboard Explained
Every successful Rivalry win contributes to the “Showdown” reward track. At the start of the season, players choose to align with either Team Ice King or Team Foundation. As the community hits collective milestones on these tracks, rewards are unlocked for all participants, regardless of which team you selected. This ensures that no player is locked out of content based on the opposing team’s progress.
Online Challenges and Physical Prizes
Beyond the in-game mechanics, Epic Games hosts an official Showdown leaderboard on their website. By connecting your Epic account, you can tackle weekly challenges to earn in-game cosmetics. These challenges remain available throughout the season, allowing you to complete them at your own pace. Furthermore, top-performing players on the global leaderboard have the opportunity to win exclusive physical prizes.
