Nintendo officially confirmed on Friday that its live-action adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” is set to hit theaters on March 26, 2027.
A Strategic Move to Boost the New App
The announcement arrived just one day after the latest Nintendo Direct livestream—a platform usually reserved for major company updates. This timing was deliberate, serving as a tactical push to drive downloads for the newly launched “Nintendo Today!” application.
During Thursday’s presentation, legendary game director Shigeru Miyamoto introduced the “Nintendo Today!” news app. Fans who promptly installed the application were the first to receive the exclusive reveal regarding the “Zelda” movie’s theatrical debut.
What to Expect From Nintendo Today!
The app is designed to function as a hub for daily updates across Nintendo’s vast gaming catalog. It features customization tools, allowing users to tailor their news feeds to prioritize their favorite franchises.
Betting Big on Iconic IP
While the entertainment landscape is currently saturated with adaptations of existing intellectual property, Nintendo remains confident in its strategy. The company has already seen massive success with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which raked in $1.3 billion globally against a $100 million production budget, securing its place as the 18th-highest-grossing film of all time.
Although “Zelda” may not share the exact level of universal recognition as “Mario,” its commercial footprint is significant. The title “Breath of the Wild” alone has surpassed 34 million copies sold, outperforming the combined sales of “Pokémon Gold,” “Silver,” and “Crystal.”
Looking Ahead: The Switch 2
As anticipation builds for the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for next week, the “Nintendo Today!” app may become the primary destination for early, official details regarding the company’s next-generation hardware.
