Nintendo has officially unveiled the Switch 2, a refined evolution of its iconic hybrid console designed to push hardware boundaries eight years after the original’s debut. We went hands-on with the new device to test its updated ergonomics, graphical capabilities, and the innovative new Joy-Con functionality.
Refining the Hardware: What’s New?
The Switch 2 features a slightly larger footprint, measuring 4.5 inches tall by 10.7 inches wide with Joy-Cons attached. While it is roughly an inch longer and half an inch taller than the original, the thickness remains familiar, and the weight increase is negligible. Transitioning to the new hardware feels intuitive, much like upgrading to a new smartphone; the learning curve is minimal.
The visual experience sees a significant boost with a 7.9-inch LED display capable of 1920×1080 resolution at 120Hz. For docked play, the console supports 4K rendering at 60Hz, alongside HDR10 and variable refresh rates. These specs provide a noticeable jump in graphical fidelity, revealing intricate textures in titles like Tears of the Kingdom and sharp, clean lines in 2D games like Hades II.
Battery life is rated between two to 6.5 hours depending on usage, particularly when utilizing features like GameChat. However, the inclusion of an accessible USB-C port simplifies charging during play. Additionally, the device comes with 256 GB of internal storage and a vastly improved, sturdier kickstand.
Redesigned Joy-Cons: Magnetic and Precise
The new Joy-Con 2 controllers have been completely overhauled. Nintendo has shifted to a magnetic attachment system, which feels more intuitive than the previous rail-based design, while still requiring a button press to detach. Internally, the controllers have been redesigned for smoother, more precise movement, aimed at addressing the long-standing drift issues of the original model.
Perhaps the most surprising addition is the “mouse mode.” Each controller now houses a mouse sensor, gyro, and accelerometer, allowing for PC-like precision in select games. In titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the right Joy-Con seamlessly transitions between standard controller mode and mouse mode, providing first-person shooter fans a familiar way to control camera angles. For those who prefer legacy hardware, the original Switch Joy-Cons remain compatible via Bluetooth, though they cannot be attached to the Switch 2 body.
New Gaming Frontiers: Mario Kart and Donkey Kong
Nintendo showcased two massive titles: Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. Both games lean into a “faux open world” design, encouraging exploration while maintaining structured objectives. Mario Kart World features a 24-player grand prix where tracks flow into one another seamlessly; players can drive off-course to explore the world map between races. Donkey Kong Bananza serves as the gorilla’s first 3D platformer in over a decade, focusing on environmental combat where the player can manipulate the terrain to defeat enemies.
Furthermore, existing titles like Mario Party Jamboree will utilize the Switch 2’s new attachable camera for unique mini-games, allowing players to incorporate their own movements into the gameplay loop.
Is the Investment Worth It?
Priced at $450, the Switch 2 enters a competitive market. While it faces stiff competition from devices like the Steam Deck, its price point is consistent with modern hardware inflation. The value proposition lies in its exclusive library, including The Duskbloods, Mario Kart World, and Metroid Prime 4, alongside ports like Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition.
For casual players, there is no immediate rush to upgrade. However, given Nintendo’s historical reluctance to drop console prices, those who know they will eventually purchase the system may find little benefit in waiting. If you are a dedicated Nintendo fan, the technical and experiential upgrades make this a compelling next step.
