Destiny 2: Renegades, the latest expansion from Bungie, officially launched this week, delivering a massive infusion of Star Wars-inspired gameplay, new social hubs, and a revamped progression loop that positions the title as a must-play for both veterans and returning Guardians.
A Galaxy Far, Far Away Meets Destiny
Destiny has always flirted with science-fantasy, but Renegades takes those inspirations to the extreme. The expansion leans heavily into iconic tropes—lightsabers, Jedi-like archetypes, and classic space-western storytelling beats—reimagined within the Destiny universe. While these aesthetic shifts occasionally feel forced, they undeniably inject a fresh energy into the game’s core loop, marking a significant improvement over the content provided in Edge of Fate.
The Narrative Stakes and Action
In this new chapter, players face off against the godlike Nine, who are manipulating a Kylo Ren-esque antagonist. This villain is preparing a doomsday weapon capable of decimating the Vanguard. The narrative serves as a direct homage to the Star Wars canon, featuring everything from trash compactors to intense clashes between red and green energy blades. Despite the derivative storytelling, the relentless pace and the “one-person army” power fantasy keep the experience engaging from start to finish.
New Worlds and Extraction-Style Gameplay
Renegades introduces a lawless Cantina as its primary social space, serving as a hub for competing factions. Players can venture into distinct play zones across Venus, Mars, and Europa to tackle bounty hunting and smuggling missions. These objectives draw clear inspiration from extraction shooters like Arc Raiders and Helldivers, yet they remain grounded in the tight, responsive gunplay that defines the Destiny franchise.
Mastering the Praxic Blade
The standout addition is undoubtedly the Praxic Blade. This lightsaber analogue is a triumphant success, fundamentally altering playstyles with its ability to deflect incoming fire, perform wide boomerang-like throws, and deliver devastating melee strikes. It taps into a mythic warrior power fantasy that feels perfectly at home in the game’s sandbox.
Refining the Endgame Experience
Bungie has clearly prioritized accessibility for returning players. The expansion offers deep customizability for high-end activities, allowing players to revisit classic dungeons, raids, and exotic missions with flexible difficulty settings. Coupled with new challenges like the three-person Equilibrium dungeon, the expansion provides a steady, rewarding stream of content for those looking to optimize their builds.
While the heavy-handed melding of the Star Wars aesthetic may not resonate with every purist, Renegades succeeds as an ambitious creative twist. It offers hours of satisfying exploration and build-crafting, proving that while it may not be the fundamental reinvention some fans desire, it is a polished and highly enjoyable expansion.
