Bungie Maps Out Multi-Year Narrative Strategy for Marathon

Bungie is positioning its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, as a long-term narrative experience, with creative director Julia Nardin confirming that the studio has already mapped out the game’s story trajectory for several years to come.

A Narrative Built on Player Agency

While the studio has a clear vision for the game’s future, Nardin emphasizes that the narrative isn’t strictly set in stone. Speaking on the nature of live service games, she noted that player input is essential to the experience. “We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it,” Nardin explained. For Bungie, this collaborative storytelling is a core component of the live service model.

Balancing Static Lore with Evolving Mysteries

Creating a narrative that feels both authored and reactive presents a unique challenge. To navigate this, Bungie has decided that the history of the colony prior to the players’ arrival remains “locked.” Players will uncover the dark secrets of Tau Ceti by fulfilling contracts and discovering specific in-game items. Bungie intends to expand upon this backstory continuously, ensuring the game’s world evolves in ways that reflect both its established history and the future interests of its community.

Addressing the Onboarding Challenge

Learning from the criticisms leveled at Destiny 2—specifically regarding the “vaulting” of content and the resulting difficulty for new players to follow the story—Bungie is taking a more deliberate approach with Marathon. The studio is prioritizing an accessible onboarding experience to avoid alienating newcomers.

“It’s also important that players can jump into Marathon at any time,” Nardin adds. “They’ll always be able to uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while experiencing its present. We want every season to be a new entry point, and for new players to be able to understand what’s going on regardless of how long we’ve all been running.”
